The Pendry San Diego is a luxury hospitality brand owned by the Montage Hotel & Resorts. It is also part of the world’s independent hotel loyalty network program called “I Prefer Hotel Rewards”. With a simple email inquiry to firstname.lastname@example.org, you can status match (i.e. Hilton Diamond or Marriott Platinum) to its highest status “Elite”.
Within 24-48 hours, we got an email confirmation showing our status change from “Insider” to “Elite”. Notable additional benefits include “Welcome Amenity”, “Points Bonus”, and “Food & Beverage Offerings”
Cash rates at this hotel especially on the weekends can be quite astronomical.
A phenomenal (but complicated) loophole around this is to use Citibank ThankYou Rewards to transfer to Choice Rewards to then book this “I Prefer Hotel Rewards” property. This $900+ on a Saturday night property will only set you back 45,000 Choice Rewards points (22,500 Citi ThankYou points).
It is immediately clear that the highlight of this property is its location. Located right in the center of Gaslamp Quarter, it is right in the heart of the hustle & bustle tailored to experiencing the vibrant nightlife of downtown San Diego.
Upon checking in, we were gifted a “Pendry Moët Coin” — quite a creative welcome amenity. Another interesting amenity is that hotel guests a secret code word “Hollywood” (shhh, between you and me) to have their drinks spiked at the Fifth and Rose bar.
The room itself is comfortable but on the small side for my personal taste.
On the plus side with the volume turned up, it’s possible to directly watch T.V. while showering.

Trying the local eats around the area is super convenient. San Diego is known for its breweries and we decided to try the local eats at Half Door Brewery just minutes walk from the hotel.
Directly below the hotel, there’s even a nightclub called the “Oxford Social Club” that is a favorite amongst San Diego locals.
On Sundays, the rooftop pool is great for grabbing a cocktail and lounging. In the back, there’s even a live DJ for the hotel guests to enjoy.
Overall, the Pendry San Diego is the place to be “see to be seen” in the city. With its modern meets mid-century design, the hotel exudes a posh personality to the stay. My only critique is the exorbitant price(s) that it commands. At room rates close to $900+ on a Saturday night, this can almost get you a stay at hotels like the Park Hyatt New York, which I feel has much greater value in real estate and perks.
Luckily thanks to Citibank, this was only 22,500 points.
