Why I love points and miles

Here’s a rollercoaster “missed connection” story that almost did/did not happened. Right now I’m suppose to be on a flight to Taiwan to do an epic prank on my brother. With the world being so digitally connected, I thought it be fun to secretly just pop up in the city 🇹🇼 From his perspective, it would be as if I teleported across the Pacific Ocean — even if I could only be there for a brief moment. Hours before departure, I suddenly felt under the weather and decided it was best to rest at home. All this shenanigans was possible thru the power of points and miles.

Flexibility

Originally I envisioned Miki and Chloe there too. The flight was going to be on the classic EVA Air Royal Laurel — a Star Alliance Business Class flight we experienced many times. I immediately snatched it at 150,000 Aeroplan miles like a kid in a candy store.

Long story short, my vision for us in Asia was too wild for them. While she appreciated the hardcore efforts, we decided to let the rare seats go. Notably since it was a mileage booking, the refund was completely free.

Alright looks like it’s going to be just me then. The seat was 11K and I even selected my meals 🤤 I’ll have the… Pan Seared Wagyu Beef Ribeye Port Wine Sauce Duck Fat Potato Pave

Night before the departure, I suddenly felt under the weather. Thinking I could just sleep it off, I called it a night and dozed off to la la land with everything packed. Then the next morning I woke up and it hit me… ah #$^%$*%, I’m still not at 100%. Literally 5 hours before departure, my saner mind prevailed and decided last minute that it’s best to take it easy at home.

Overall, this is behind the scenes of a story that almost happened. Am I getting old? I used to pull off attending Oktoberfest for literally one day like it’s a walk in the park. This rollercoaster of booking and canceling would not be possible if it was a cash booking. In the world of miles, flexibility is your best friend and this story serves as a reminder of why I love points and miles so much.
